Windows updates won't run

I just realized that updates has not run since February 12, 2009. I tried to
tell it to run and it says it is searching for updates but never finishes. I
did get an error message earlier but do not remember the error code number.
Now, I ask it to search for updates and it goes out and searches but never
finishes. The Task Manager shows that the job is running. any thoughts?

determine your OS and SP level. We'll get back to you in a few ions.

Back-up any personal data (none of which should be considered 100%
trustworthy at this point) then do a format & clean install of Windows.
Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT fix this!

After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a network and before using a USB key that
isn't brand-new or hasn't been freshly formatted:
