whenever i go to the windows update site it tells me that the files required
for windows update are no longer registered or installed on my computer. it
gives me the options to"Register or reinstall the files for me now
(Recommended)" or"Let me read about more steps that might be required to
solve the problem". when i do the recommended it has the dialog titled
"registering" and then one for "installing" and it retunrs to the update site
and i get the same error page. Plus i cant find a solution on the KB site
either. WHAT DO I DO????

I am having the exact same problem and have not found a fix/solution for it
so any help would be much appreciated. For me it started when the new windows
updates were installed. It has also made windows messenger unaccesible (can't
sign in and get error code 80040111). When I use Norton goback and restore to
a previous date without the updates, everything works fine. So when the
updates were automatically installed again, exact same problem. So now I have
to turn of automatic updates and use go back again, so my comp works as it
did before. So it has to be a problem with one of the recent updates. So any
suggestions or help would be appreciated, Thanks.

I just discovered the same problem on my wife's laptop. At first I thought it
had sometning to do with IE7 but per these posts it appears to be an update
problem. I would expect a resolution from the MS god or from a techie more
knowledgeable than I. Ain't computers fun??

Count me in ! Also noticed Windows Defender can't D/L updates, Norton's
LiveUpdate can't retrieve any updates either. Ran a virus scan, but none
detected. I can access the Internet and D/L other stuff no problem.

Noticed as well that iexplore.exe takes for ever to reach Web pages and runs
at 100% whle doing that. Anxiously waiting for some MS guidance on this
peculiar one.

Some have reported that simply re-registering the MSXML3.DLL seems to fix the
problem.
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay

If that hasn't helped you may need to re-registered some more files:

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :-

net stop wuauserv

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

net start wuauserv

Yes, I had read this from several posts in Tech Arena and it did resolve my
issue. Question remains: why was it necessary to re-register this DLL ? The
interdependencies are gettings so complexe that it's scary to think how it
all works...
