Never had a windows update problem before till this latest batch of downloads
this week. They will download but not install. Includes .net, windows media
player 10, etc. updates. Anybody have ideas how to fix? I found the error
code in the C:\windows\windows update.log file.

Searching the Web, the error may be caused by Windows Installer.
What is your version of Windows Installer?
Click Start, Run, type

msiexec /?

Ran windows update again and got this (which is what started me on this wild
goose chase):
Download went fine then dialog box says:

done!
Initializing installation... done!
Installing Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.0 SP3,
English (KB886906) (update 1 of 3)... failed!
Installing Security Update for Windows Media Player 10 for Windows XP
(KB911565) (update 2 of 3)...

Then the system just hangs there, forever. And will hang at system shutdown
also.

I suspect the real culprit is this .net update. A long time ago I had an
error updating .net and eventually hid the update. No problem since....till
now. I think I finally have to deal with it.

Hmmm......

Thanks,

The version is Ok, but now I don't think the problem is caused by
Windows Installer.
Did you try to uninstall Microsoft .NET Framework and run Windows
Update?

I've also sent a trouble report via MS "free" windows update support link.
We'll see what they say but suspect it will send me to the same knowledge
base articles so I might as well get started.

I really would like to find a shortcut but fear it does not exist......

Thanks,

Not sure if you want to go this route, but I think it is quicker than try to
research the problem and then try to fix it. Format the machine and reload
the OS. You are right to say that uninstalling .net is a total nightmare.
