Have you tried *everything* listed here:
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...TNGP15.phx.gbl

Do you have a 3rd party software firewall installed (in that
case, what vendor is it from)?

Do you go through a hardware firewall?

Do you go through a proxy (in that case, what vendor is it from)?

Hi

You may need to create an anonymous access rule for Windows Update
site on the proxy server if that is possible for you.

More here:

XP Windows Update Error 0x8024402C / 0x80072f78 when behind a
Microsoft ISA server
http://www.electrosonics.net/technot...0x8024402C.htm

and

You experience problems when you access the Windows Update Version 5
Web site through a server that is running ISA Server

I have been having the same problem - but I did find a fix.

My company uses an "automatic configuration script" as set in IE
tools->interenet options->connections->LAN settings.

the fix came from running the "proxycfg.exe" command from a dos prompt with
the name of the configuration script minus the port numbers.

I ran the following command:
proxycfg.exe -p http://autoproxy....com
(i removed part of the script name for privacy)

Regards,
