windows validation fail

I bought a pc from a computer fair with xp pro preinstalled to show the
system working. I tried to get the windows updates but it failed the
validation (no surprises there)

My question is, Can i somehow use my genuine copy of xp pro (with product
key) to modify/repair this installation and thereby pass the validation?
Alternatively do i need to remove this copy entirely and reinstall with my
genuine copy.
