My local repair shop has somehow installed winows xp professional on my pc.
Previously my pc contained a legitimate version of windows xp home edition
(installed by the manufacturer)! Now I can not update because the validation
has failed. Is there anything I can do to receive the updates - are they
necessary? Sermons about the risks of using a local repair shop are fully
justified but definitely not required!

IMO that repair shop owes you either the same version, keywise, of windows
you gave it to them with OR a new CD and/or new COA. IF they give you a new
COA, visit MS to be certain it's not pirated.
Too many repair shops operate this way. They just push a new, usually
pirated version/key onto your machine rather than actually fiddle around
fixing it.
OTOH, perhaps they just "forgot" to put your system back? Not likely, but
they might claim that.

You might have to do a complete reinstall to get it back to the right way if
they won't help you, but ... I'd get firm with them if htey don't make it
right. That's like taking a car in for repair and getting it back with a
new engine instead of a repair; but an engine that no one can work on.

Anyway you look at it, it's their problem though, not yours, and you did
nothing to cause it; they did.

Best luck,

Pop`
