Windows Vista & ACPI

I just tried to load Vista Beta 2. I got a message essentially saying that
the PC is non-ACPI compliant, therefore Vista will not load. Will there be a
version of Vista that will install on machines without ACPI, just as there is
for Windows XP?

Thanks in advance...

IIRC, ACPI is now required and non ACPI systems are not supported anymore.

Vista doesn't have HALs for non-acpi systems. So it wouldn't install. Go
thru this slide for more info:

I would be surprised if you could find a non-ACPI consumer PC system that
could run Vista in a fashion that would be usable, even if there was still
non-ACPI support.

I think all Pentium III machines are ACPI. Trying to run Vista on Pentium II -
hm...

Not all of them are in "Good ACPI" list, though. There may be a lot of P4
machines with half-baked ACPI.

I have the old dual Pentium-III machine with VIA Apollo chipset (Epox D3VA
mobo). In Server 2003, the power button on the front panel does not work.
Surely due to lame ACPI support. Nevertheless, NT4/w2k/XP are fine on this
machine.

Also the glorious Asus P5P800 mobo (Prescott CPU+865PE chipset, one of the last
AGP mobos, very popular here in Russia, maybe one of the most popular mobos for
Prescott) seems to have CPU overheat issues with w2k (but not XP or 2003, or
even FreeBSD). Possibly this is related to ACPI too, since the fan speed
control does not work on w2k.
