WIndows to Vista and bkf files

I recently purchased a new computer with Vista Home Premium loaded. I have a
large number of files from my old system stored in .BKF files on an external
drive. Is there a way to read/restore these files to the new system or do I
have to fire up the old one and then move the files individually?

Hi Specialized,

No problem; you just need to download the Windows NT Backup-Restore Utility
for Vista:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

This utility runs on Vista and will restore your BKF files. The download is
about 1MB, not large.

Hope it helps,

To restore backup files made in XP you will need this:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

When I try to change the settings so that backup storage is enabled as is
required by that app the panel comes up blank; even when running as
adminsitrator.

Hi David,

I didn't think Brecca, Wexstan or Edda were running Vista :-)

Anyway ... I'm not sure I understand your problem scenario. It sounds like
you have -

a) installed Remote Storage Management under Control Panel, Program and
Features, Windows Features;
b) installed the NTBackup-Restore utility, downloaded from microsoft.com;
c) run the newly installed NTBackup-Restore utility, as Administrator;
d) and now you can't see ... um, what, exactly?

I'm guessing you have the window titled "Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility
[Restore and Manage media]" displayed - right?

- what device are you trying to restore from? Is it a tape, magnetic disk,
or other media?
- can you see the device from elsewhere in Vista? eg in Explorer, or (if
tape) Admin Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Removeable Storage?

If you have a *.bkf file on disk type media (eg hard disk, network share,
CD-ROM etc), try running the Restore Wizard, under the "Welcome" tab. In the
first panel of the Wizard (after the Welcome panel) there is a "Browse"
button you can use to browse to *.bkf files in arbitrary locations. That may
assist you locating the backup file?

Otherwise, can you explain in a bit more detail the problem you're seeing?
Which panel? What kind of media are you restoring from? Is the
backup/restore device detected anywhere outside of the Restore utility? eg
in Device Manager?

Hopefully it will be easy to get you up and running successfully.

Cheers,
