Hello ..

I am new to this forum. I have spent hours on the telephone and o
online chats with customer service people at Dell and Microsoft, and
still don't have a clear answer to my question(s). I get differen
answers depending who I speak to -- sometimes from the same company. I
has become frustrating and time-consuming

So I am hoping that someone here might be able to help me

I currently have an HP computer with Windows XP. I use Word 2002.
obtained this as separate software. It did not come installed on th
computer. It was not the XP Office suite. Just Word 2002 (part of
Works package, I believe).

So I have the Word 2002 CD. Also, all my saved documents on m
computer are Word 2002 documents saved as Word 2002 documents

I am considering purchasing a new computer from Dell. It come
installed with Vista Home Premium. I inquired about having XP installe
instead, but they charge an extra $120.00 to give you XP instead o
Vista

Here are the questions that I can't seem to get a consensus/straigh
answer for

1. Can I install and use Word 2002 on Vista Home Premium, using m
Word 2002 CD

2. What happens to my saved Word 2002 documents? I am planning to us
a flash drive to save and then transfer things from my old computer t
the new one

When I transfer the Word 2002 saved documents, will I be able to ope
them in Vista Home Premium

3. If Vista HP will NOT run Word 2002 and I need to purchase a ne
version of Word, how will I be able to open my saved Word 200
documents?

Suppose I have Office Home/Student (or whatever it's called) 2007, fo
example? How will I be able to open my Word 2002 saved documents

4. If Vista HP WILL run Word 2002 and I install it, continue using it
and continue creating/saving documents in Word 2002, and then I decid
eventually to upgrade to Office 2007 (or whatever), I will have
computer full of Word 2002 documents. Will I be able to open them onc
I have removed Word 2002 and installed Office 2007

It is surprising how many different responses I have received fro
Microsoft and Dell. So I'm still confused. And help/advice would b
most welcomed and appreciated

Thanks ..

linda

Yes. UNLESS it is an OEM copy.

I don't know what you mean. NOTHING "happens" to them unless you do
something to them. You can copy them to any computer you choose from the
flash drive.

Yes if you've installed Word

You won't need to purchase anything - Word will install and run on Vista
just fine.

If you have that on your machine it will be a TRIAL version. You have
two options. Run with the trial to see how you like it and if you do,
purchase a licence. Office 2007 will open your 2002 documents just fine.
Or, if you don't want to do that, UNINSTALL the trial version before
installing Word 2002

Yes

Dell "techies" are not known for their knowledge outside of their
scripts (that goes for most Vendor "helpdesks" BTW) and MS want to sell
you a new copy! Are you surprised?

Just be aware that Office 2007 introduced a different document format
from previous versions as the default document type. If you DO create
and/or save edited documents in 2007, be warned that you will need to do
a "Save As" to get them into a format that prior versions of Office can
open natively. (There is an add-in to enable prior versions of Office to
open 2007 ***x format files).

That's correct but many people don't even know the format is different,
particularly when the default Windows Explorer setting is not changed of
"hiding extensions for known file types".
