I have a similar problem to some other s. I have just bought a new laptop,
and all of my files to date have been saved using office 2003. I want to
open them up in office 2007, but I am using windows vista. The compatibility
download (at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en)
does not say that it supports this operating system - does it?
Thank you, from a luddite working towards computer literacy.

You should have no difficulties opening files created in Office 2003
from Office 2007. If you are getting any error messages, please post the
exact text. You can install the Compatibility Pack but it is really for
Office 2003 users to make it possible to open files created in Office 2007.

You should not need the compatibility download to read an Office 2003 file in Office 2007. It is
required for reading a 2007 file in 2003 (unless you change the save-as format to office 2003)

Users running Office 2007 on Windows Vista do not need the Compatibility
Pack since it already opens files created in previous versions of Office and
saves in older formats as well.

Thanks for replying, but I can't read my files! I get the prompt to select
which program I want to use to open the documents, and most open fine, but
anything with a table gets all messed up. I was just wondering if there was
some way to fix this.

Since this is specifically a Microsoft Word issue, you probably want to post
it in a group relating your problems:
microsoft.public.word.application.errors
microsoft.public.word.conversions

I honestly can't tell what could be causing the problems.

Do you have Office on your new computer at all? Office does not come
with the OS, it's a separate purchase. Some manufacturers may bundle
Office, or a "trial version" of office with their package, but
generally if you want it on your computer, you'll have to buy it.

That's not your only option, though. Open Office
(http://www.openoffice.org) is a free, open source alternative. It
includes word processor, spreadsheet, presentation creator, DB system.
It will read your Office 2003 files.
