Windows Vista Desktop

I have recently got a Vista laptop, and am having an effect on my desktop
when I use it in different scenarios. When I use it with a projector, or
dock it using a screen with lower resolution, the icons on my scren
redistribute themselves, and the stay re-distributed when I go back to
standard laptop mode.

I know why this is - the different resolutions in the different modes force
the system to alter the way the screen appears.

Is there a way that I can have different desktop modes for different
situations, and have the system recognise each mode and adjust accordingly?

This is not a big problem, but it is irritating.
