Windows Vista failure to upgrade...

I purchased a new HP computer in July 2007, which had Vista Home running on
it. I got used to it and had to purchase some other audio hardware that would
run on Vista (M-Audio Delta 66 had issues). Office 2000 ran ok. As did City
of Heroes, Guild War, and Half-Life2.

Then some automatic updates in February caused Windows to stop updating,
Defender to stop updating, CoH to stop working, and my internet connection to
be abysmally slow for certain sites--microsoft.com, Yahoo mail, etc. So I did
a system restore to the end of January when everything was fine. Internet
began working again, but CoH refused to update, Vista still would not update,
nor would Defender, etc.

So I downloaded the full Vista SP1 onto CD and installed it, hoping that it
would correct all previous updates. I should have known better since I have
been performing Windows updates since 3.0.

This update screwed up the rest of my computer. Here are the things that no
longer work: Guild Wars, City of Heroes, Half-Life 2, Windows Update, Windows
Defender, Yahoo Mail, Microsoft.com (to download the updates "by hand"), and
my 1394 ports (I had an external hard drive hooked up to one of my 1394
ports, but now it's running just fine on an USB 2.0 port instead).

I bought this computer to make my life easier not more difficult (prior to
this I build my own computers). Vista is such a huge pile of crap I am hereby
DOWNGRADING TO XP, and will continue to research other options like Linux or
switching to Mac totally.

Vista = the least productive OS ever.

A Service Pack is not designed to correct an otherwise
dodgy installation of an operating system. You should
backup your files and reinstall Vista from scratch, then
install the Vista service pack.
