windows vista freezes and taskbar does not unfreeze it

Please help me.

I have a problem where a program in Windows Vista freezes up and the task
bar doesn't unfreeze it. In addition, I am unable to shutdown or restart
properly. I have Vista home premiums and 3 gb of RAM. My computer is only
2 years old.

It would be nice for those who want to help you for you to tell them
what the program is.

It happened here also. After applying sp1 the vista desktop simply
froze within 30 secs. No programs started by me and the problem is
reproduceable on my oem factory installed VHP (ASUS Pro31P)

Only way to shutdown was to Power off via switch. I did not re-install
the OS and received virtually no help from the computer seller or MS.

What I did do was this:

1. Remove hard disk and replace with new , but larger unit.

2. Install Linux.
