Hi, Mike.
We were all newbies once, and not so long ago! ;<}

Please define or describe "crash" in this context. Hard drives are very
reliable these days and seldom fail. (I did NOT say "never fail!") And
they seldom crash repeatedly; the first crash generally means "buy a new
drive".

When the computer sits idle for a while, some tasks that are instructed to
work only "in the background" start up and try to finish their jobs before
we hit a key to indicate that we are ready to use the machine again. One
background task indexes the contents of the drive so that the Search
function can work more quickly. Another is the drive defragmenter, which
tries to reorganize files stored on the drive to speed up access when we
need the files. In either case, the computer may seem to have gone to sleep
while idling and it may take several seconds for it to wake up when we press
a key or move the mouse. Is THIS what you mean by a drive crash?
You may also have your computer set to Hibernate after some idle period.
Laptops do this to save battery power, but desktops also can do this to save
on energy use. This is certainly not a "crash", but just normal behavior,
and you can change it. Click Start | Control Panel | Power Options to see
what your settings are and to change them if you like.
