Hey!

I've been having a look around the site and just wanted to say sorr
for making yet another post about Vista crashes. I've read the other
but don't really know my way around a computer well enough, t
understand a lot of the replies. I use my PC mainly for deskto
publishing, internet browsing and downloading (occasionally).
wouldn't say the hard drive is under much stress really but it seems t
crash whenever I leave the computer idol. If anyone could give any i
sight into how I could fix this problem, it would be hugely appreciated
And please remember if you respond, I'm not that clever! :S

Thanks Very Much,

Mike

Hi, Mike.

We were all newbies once, and not so long ago! ;<}

Please define or describe "crash" in this context. Hard drives are very
reliable these days and seldom fail. (I did NOT say "never fail!") And
they seldom crash repeatedly; the first crash generally means "buy a new
drive".

When the computer sits idle for a while, some tasks that are instructed to
work only "in the background" start up and try to finish their jobs before
we hit a key to indicate that we are ready to use the machine again. One
background task indexes the contents of the drive so that the Search
function can work more quickly. Another is the drive defragmenter, which
tries to reorganize files stored on the drive to speed up access when we
need the files. In either case, the computer may seem to have gone to sleep
while idling and it may take several seconds for it to wake up when we press
a key or move the mouse. Is THIS what you mean by a drive crash?

You may also have your computer set to Hibernate after some idle period.
Laptops do this to save battery power, but desktops also can do this to save
on energy use. This is certainly not a "crash", but just normal behavior,
and you can change it. Click Start | Control Panel | Power Options to see
what your settings are and to change them if you like.

Don't pick a fight with an old man.
If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

Basically when it crashes, the screen just completely freezes. I can
tell exactly when it's crashed thanks to the clock in the bottom right.
Sometimes it can be a matter of minutes from when I've left the
computer, and other times it can be hours afterwards. Both of these
different scenarios the computer will be doing the same tasks, but the
freezes still happen at different times! It's becoming quite a worry
for me now to the point where I've lost quite a lot of work when I've
just gone to get a drink and it freezes. I've recently started using
BitComet (not heavily) and wondered if anyone had any idea whether this
programme is prone to such problems? I did have a look at "Power
Settings" and gave all three a try and different times and the same
problem occured! I am also about to try the "System Defrag" to see if
that helps, and i'll post the response but in the mean time - is there
anyone who is or has had this same problem? Any tips at all would be
hugely appreciated.

Many thanks,

Mike.
