Windows Vista Home Basic cannot recognize the modem in my laptop

I bought a Toshiba Satellite A-135-S4666 in Office Depot, Miami, last couple
of weeks. It came with Windows Vista Home Basic pre-installed.

I tried to create a new dial-up connection and Windows Vista tells me there
is no modem.

I called Toshiba 2 times. First, the technician ran a full diagnostic test
in Device Manager and told me that the modem, and its driver are working
fine. I kept on trying and called Toshiba again. The second technician told
me the modem is bad, and to send the machine back to the US and have it
serviced.

Another friend who bought the same machine is having the same problem, which
makes me wonder if this is not a bug in Windows Vista.

Can some one help me?

Rather than it being a bug in Vista (although there are plenty of
those!), it is far more likely to be bad drivers from Toshiba. Go to
Toshiba's website for your specific model laptop and download/install
the modem drivers.

Malke, thanks for the prompt reply. But guess what! I called Microsoft in Sao
Paulo and their desk support found out it was sheer bad configuration! We
opened services.msn and activated all telephone settings (Telephony, Remote
Access Conection Manager, Remote Access auto correction manager, and Vista
recognized the modem. Thanks aa a lot anyways. Best wishes

More likely it is an issue with the included McAfee Internet security Suite
or AV they've included. Try turning it off and see if you still have the
same problem. Note, you may need to reboot to unload it completely,
assuming it has an option to turn it off. If it does, do so, then try
again. If you are able to establish a connection, dump McAfee in favor of
AVG, www.grisoft.com or AVAST, www.avast.com for antivirus and use the Vista
built-in firewall instead.
