There is a very good chance are that you are seeing the affects of a
hijackware infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

2. Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!) in Safe
Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft

security updates.

Hi PA Bear,
Thank you for attempting to help - _ have downloaded No: 1 and it is at
present scanning my PC so far nothing found.
As far as No: 2 goes as it is an online scan I cannot run this in Safe Mode
as my PC does not connect to the Net in Safe Mode - any solution to this or
do I just scan my PC on line??
Thanks regards BernhardSmily

Skip to Step #3 now (though you may have been able to do Step #2 in Safe
Mode with Networking).

Hi PA Bear,
I Have checked my system for viruses - downloaded al your recommendations
and ran all the checks - downloaded Anti Malware/Bytes program ran the check
and it found 1 item which I cleared -I downloaded
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx and ran it and
6 hours later it is still running but has not found any Malware - I ran
virus checks and found nothing - I went into all the anti malware links and
that did not help - my machine is queaky clean - I don't know what else to
do after also searching the net for hours fo answers but only found
complaints and horror stories about Vista - I am about to give up on Vista
Update and Vista altogether have you got anymore suggestions??? Regards

Repost from a previous reply of mine:

The above being said, if Windows Update hasn't worked for over a year, your
best bet now would be to back-up your personal data and then format &
reinstall Windows. Please note that a Repair Install (AKA an in-place
upgrade) will NOT correct the problem. A competent technician at a
respectable local shop might charge you about 100£ to do this for you.

After the clean install, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" to
see this page and take care of EVERYTHING mentioned before doing anything
else online:

5 steps to help protect your new computer before you go online
http://www.microsoft.com/protect/com...nced/xppc.mspx

Good luck!
