I just upgraded from XP to Vista and so far am kicking myself for it. After I
installed and got all my drivers updated i went to shut down windows and it
will not shut down. It closes all programs goes to the shut down screen and
then turns black and I get the blue screen of death. The pc then reboots.
Everything seems to be working proprerly and it is running great, I just have
this one issue. If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them.

Thanks,
Glenn

Reinstall XP. Your life will be better for it.

No guarantees...but maybe the following
article will offer some ideas:

(927393) You may experience power
management-related symptoms on a
computer that is running Windows Vista

If I could have found the disk I would would have done that in the first
place LOL. I had a trojan I couldnt get rid of. When I ordered my computer
it was about a month before vista came out, and I preordered a copy from Dell
when i ordered the PC. I found the Vista disk but cant find the XP one so I
am stuck with it.

Ok so at the risk of sounding like an idiot how do I find out who
manufactured my motherboard? I checked the bios and I currently have the
latest version installed. I am assuming that I have the latest driver
installed for the motherboard since my original failed a few weeks ago and it
was replaced however I will check to make sure.

How do you know it's the latest if you don't know the manufacturer?

Google Belarc Advisor. It will tell you more than you need to know
about your computer.

'System Information' should give you the information.
My DELL XPS410 reports System Model as Dell DXP061 which is the motherboard
model number.

For some additional information about shutdown problems you can try:
Event Viewer
Custom Views / Shutdown broblems

Have alook at 'Windows Vista does not shutdown '
(http://www.winvistaclub.com/t48.html)and see if something there helps
you. For BSOD troubleshooting, try 'this guide'

Before you go chasing around in a lot of different directions, find out what
is causing the blue screen. What is the text of the failure? Any
notifications in event viewer? When the reboot occurs Windows should be
notifying you of the improper shutdown. What is the text of that
notification?

If you are unable to get the blue screen text before the reboot, on the
advanced tab of system properties click the settings button for startup and
recovery and uncheck the automatically restart box. Now duplicate the error
and report back or deal with the offending device/driver.
