Windows Vista purr sound file

This may or may not sound crazy, but ever since I started using Windows Vista
I keep hearing a purring sound every now and then.

I'll explain to the best of my ability.

Windows Vista () will play a sound file of a cat purring at random.
Normally, I can figure out what I'm doing that makes a sound file go off, but
this time I can't. I'm NEVER -- and I do mean absolutely NEVER -- doing the
same thing when the file plays. Sometimes, when I've just left the computer
sitting, it'll play the sound file as well.

I have searched my hard drive for any and all sound files and played through
each and every one of them, but to no avail. I just can't seem to find where
it's originating from. I even went so far as to open up the Windows sound
file themes (or whatever you'd like to call them) and listened to all the
files that were there too. Still, NOTHING!

I'd appreciate any help anyone can give. I normally get around to this
forum/discussion/group close to never -- I usually don't have any problems at
all, but this is just annoying me.

If you have any advice, help, or know what's going on, please email me at

Thank you.

Firstly, are you absolutely sure it's a sound file playing, and not some
weird noise from a fan, a disk, or something?

If so, and it is not initiated by what you are doing, then it must be
initiated by some event not caused by you. The only thing that comes to
mind is the sound that plays for an incoming email.

It's probably worth checking.

You have a Virus. My PC would pop up a little devil icon every time i right
clicked after I visited a wierdo web site, instead of trying to find it I
formatted the hard drive & reinstalled.

Do you have a sound scheme in place other than the default one? Perhaps it
is configured to play the purring sound when a program starts or some other
frequently occurring event. I would also look at a spyware detector and see
if something is lurking around that shouldn't be there.

I am absolutely sure that it's not from the processor/tower. The sound comes
from the speakers.

How do you know it's a virus?

The only sound file I changed in the sound scheme is the incoming mail WAV
file. I changed it to another file that I've been using for years.

I'm fairly sure it's not the changing of the sound scheme, too. The purring
sound file still played when it was the original Windows default sound scheme.
