Windows Vista security program update problem

Windows Vista alerts me that I need a security update, but when I attempt to
do so, I get an error message "Windows could not search for new updates"
with error code 8024A000. I also cannot update Windows Defender giong
directly through that program: When I attempt to update, Defender says "The
program can't check for definition updates" with an error code 0x800021f.
ANyone familiar with this problem? Could it be related to framework.net,
which I just installed?
