windows vista service pack 1 never installs

The patch "windows vista service pack 1 " is always in my list of available
updates.
When i go to shutdown, I get a message that its installing.
Yet, next time I boot up, its back in the list of availble updates.
This has gone on since the service pack came out

If I go into "review update history", the status of all updates is "sucessful"
There are no error messages.
The PC seems to be installing hte updates and then shuts itself off.
Without error messages, its difficult to debug, any help is appreciated

windows keeps trying to update the service pack 1, but always reads failed.
don't know what to do to complete this download.
