The version of Vista Ultimate that was handed out at the product kick-off
(and installed by me and others) does not update and apparently is not
supported by Microsoft???

How do I get a REAL copy of Ultimate (as promised) to replace the un-real
one I have without having to pay for it?

Everyone that got a copy of Vista at the kickoff must be in the same
situation if they installed the product.

Thanks!

I am using the Vista Ultimate I received at the launch event in NY in
January and it updates just fine, also using another complimentary copy I
received and it updates just fine like two other copies I bought and have
installed on a laptop at home and my PC at work.

Are you behind a hardware or software Firewall? It might be blocking you
from receiving updates. Has the inability to update been occurring since you
installed the product or just recently?

Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder. (Because of possible folder
corruption or other errors.)
Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:
a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this
folder.
Create a new folder called "SoftwareDistribution"
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.
Rerun Windows Update.

Excellent post (I would rate your post if I could figure out how!). Thanks
for all the detail. I followed your instructions. Still getting error
8024D00A. In searching the net I see LOTS of posts about this error which in
essence says the launch day version of Ultimate had a life span of only 90
days and cannot be updated. The event I attended was in Atlanta.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Well, that sounds like a trial version, the complimentary copies I received
btw are full retail versions. Sorry about that I guess you just have to buy
a product key online and convert it to a full license.
