Windows Vista Ultimate memory error

Hello,
I have a problem with my Windows Vista Ultimate.
I have 1GB of DDR2 667MHz memory installed on my computer, twice than needed
to run Windows Vista. Regularly, my Windows XP uses 30%-40% and Windows Vista
uses 50%-70%. But, sometimes the memory uses jumps to 98%-100%, and my
computer stuck. I have tries to use Page file using my Hard Disk (2GB-4GB),
but it didn't help – it even made it worse. My computer read/wrote from/to
the hard-disk all the time.
I thought it might be an error in my memory itself, but the Windows
Diagnostic Tool said my computer's memory functions well.
What may be the problem? It does not make sense my computer uses the whole
1GB of physical memory when only the windows Vista is running, with no other
programs.

Thank you very much, I hope you may help me.

This is only my opinion, but I never put much stock in MS's contention that
500 mb of memory was enough to run Vista.
I'm using 2 gb of memory for Ultimate and it works great.

Windows Vista will fetch programs into RAM if the system is idle to speed up
loading times. So a high memory usage is not uncommon (why spend money on
RAM that's not being used?)

What are you doing when it goes back to the page file?

I don't understand. My 1GB of RAM is not enought for my system from time to
time, when it uses 100% of my memory. I have tried to use 4GB of page file on
my hard-disk, but then my computer Read/wrote all the time to the disk, and
it also slowed down the computer. so, what I did is I programmed it to use
page file only from one partition on my disk, and the system determines its
size. It made the situation better, but the system (most of the time
svchost.exe) uses all the time the disk, and it slows down the system. In XP
it does not happen.
Will one more 1GB of memory help me solv that situation?

Thanks, Amity Waisel

Something isn't right here. As Paul says, Vista preloads lots of commonly
used files into RAM in order to make your programs run faster. This is why
Vista APPEARS to use a lot more memory, and it's a GOOD thing. If an
application needs that memory, Vista releases it like a shot.

But this thing about using 100% of your system memory? This is weird -
there's a problem somewhere, but I'm afraid I can't suggest what it is.

I have succeeded to do Print Screen when my computer used 100% of its memory,
and I saw the application SearchProtocolHost.exe uses almost all of the
gigabytes of physical and virtual memory. It was more weird to see that this
application run twice (I saw SearchProtocolHost.exe twice in the Memory tab
in the Resource Monitor), and they both used almost all the memory.
about the virtual memory - maybe it slowed dows my computer because Windows
Vista tried all the time to switch the physical memorty to virtual memory, so
I cancelled the virtual memory. My computer ran faster but the problem of
using 100% of memory wasn't solved. Moreover, When I tried to run programs
which use huge amounts of memory (Like video convertors, Games, Macromedia
Flash 8, etc.), my computer stoped running because it didn't have enought
memory - so I re-enabled the Virtual memory.
Other applications which run all the time and uses most of my computer's
memory - dwm.exe (Desktop Window Manager), explorer.exe (Windows Explorer),
and when my Internet explorer is running, it uses a lot of memory
(iexplorer.exe).

Does anyone have any suggestion?

Thanks,
Amity
