Windows Vista + Update causes boot up failure

When ever I install updates from windows update on my Vista Ultimate x64
computer I have to insert the installation disc and run boot repair before i
can then get into windows again. If anyone knows how to fix this apart from
not downloading the updates please could they let me know.
