Windows Vista update error code 100

Every time I try to install "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and
..NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86" it fails to install and I
get the error code 100 with the message "Windows Update encountered an
unknown error."

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Dane,

Am experiencing the same problem -unfortunately I am not the most computer
literate so thought it may be something I was doing wrong. Do you happen
to work out how to fix the problem. Apparently I could not download the
service pack 1 when it first came out

I've been having this problem for days! Trawled the internet for all sorts of resolutions and nothing! not a sausage! And it seems this one update that won't install is affecting my computers performance with other things; internet, external harddrive! What can we do!?

both the MS Communities web interface to newsgroups
and the Google Groups archive are badly broken. ; }

You should probably assume that the 100 is really 0x100
or 256 decimal. Then that would mean:

<cmd_output OS="XPsp3">
E:\>net helpmsg 256
256 is not a valid Windows network message number.
</cmd_output>

So you can see that the message makes sense.

In any case, as always, you need to search for the context of either
representation of the code in all diagnostics which the update is
producing in order to find the context from other log messages.
