One of our Vista systems keeps updating what appears to be the same 2 updates
every time it shuts down without fail.

We loose use of this computer for about 6 hours.

Looking for suggestions.

Thanks

Which 2 updates ? The more details you provide the better chance you
have of getting assistance.

This is a good question. How do I determine which updates. From this end, we
go into restart or shut down and the computer tells us that it is performing
two updates (the first goes very quickly and then the second one goes on for
hours showing an update pgroigress window). Then the system shuts down and
boots normally the next time we start it. We purchsed a couple of Dell
Dimension E520s with Vista Business and only one of them does this? Perhaps
someone can tell me how to determine which updates it is installing?

Suggest you try booting the problematic system to Safe Mode and see if
the updates install.

Start your computer in safe mode
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...904a11033.mspx

If no joy, you can see which updates are attempting to install by
opening Windows Update in the Control Panel or, by opening the
WindowsUpdate.log that is located in the WINDOWS directory [folder].
Scroll down to the bottom of the WindowsUpdate.log for the most recent
entries. It should show the KB# of the update and a short description
for it.

EX:

2008-04-09 13:09:28:050 976 250 DnldMgr * Updates to download = 1
2008-04-09 13:09:28:050 976 250 Agent * Title = Definition Update
for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.31.8683.0)

Thank you for your advice.

I looked at the update log and it is littered with a whole night (every few
minutes) log of errors, cancelled downloads, get user token failures, failure
to find updates, ID failures, cancelled download for
invalidated/hidden/unapplicable update(s) and self update check errors. I
wrote down a bunch of these codes; but, it may be better to have someone come
in and make corrections.

Thanks...

Ouch. You're welcome. If you'd care to, please post back with the
resolution of this updating quagmire.
