Hi,

I know that MS09-004 was fixed in SP3 of SQL2005 so why was Windows Update
offering me both the SP3 and the MS09-004 update and now that I have
installed SP3 MS09-004 is still being offered? I have only seen this on
VISTA SP1 64_bit.

Chris

You'd have to ask MS your question directly, Chris.

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates.

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

Thanks Bear. As an SQL DBA I was hoping that eventually MS would see what
Windows Update was doing and fix it. I have seen at least one other post on
the same problem. Obviously WU is not seeing things correctly.

Not necessarily. E.g. have you checked that all the
modules implied by those updates have been changed
correctly? E.g. was a boot required and was it done?

If you're really curious to know why you are getting this
symptom you could activate verbose logging for WU
(ref. KB902093) and supplement its cryptic output
with a ProcMon trace of the download procedure. ; )

BTW you're more likely to find MS personnel involved
with SQL issues on the SQL Setup NG. Cross-posting
for convenience.

Good luck

Robert,

After I applied SP3 manually, I ran MU and it flagged the SP2 security patch
as needed, After a reboot MU finally seems to know that the SP2 security
patch is not needed.

That's what I meant. Some modules which were in use
could only be copied in preparation for subsequent rename
using the PendingFileRenameOperations mechanism.
You must boot for the final rename to be done and thus
install the new version(s) in place of the old one(s); otherwise
WU/MU will continue to detect that the update has not completed
and keep advising you to do it.

Glad to see you found a resolution.

Robert,

It didn't actually ask for a reboot after I installed SP3.

I am an SQL DBA so there is no way I would want to use MU to update any sort
of SQL instance though I understand why Microsoft want to do this.

Thanks

Chris
