Windows Vista Updates wont complete

When I do Windows Update on my computer with Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit,
it says its downloaded the updates, but it sits on Preparing To Install
forever, it won't move on and actually install them. Anyone got any ideas?

Try *totally* disabling the installed antivirus software first.
Consult the Help file or the manufacturer's web site to learn how this
is done.
Then try installing the updates.
Whether they succeed or not, *reenable* the installed AV afterwards.
