Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor Error :(

Hi All, I'm running Windows XP SP2 and I am trying to run the Windows Vista
Upgrade Advisor and a few seconds into the scan I am getting an error:

Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor encountered an error while scanning your
system. If the problem persists, you can uninstall Windows Vista Upgrade
Advisor and reinstall the latest version.

I have googled the error and am unable to find a solution. Is there a log
somewhere with a more specific error message that might be helpful?

Hi,

Have you uninstalled, redownloaded, and reinstalled the advisor yet?
Did you disable your antivirus software while installing and running it?

Yes, I uninstalled, redownloaded, and reinstalled WVUA. This all took place
while my Symantec Anti-Virus Auto-Protect was disabled.

I am also having this problem. I'm running XP Pro SP2, on a dual core
machine with 2gb RAM and gigs of available disk. I wondered if it was
because a service wasn't running, so went through the stopped services
and started them, but that didn't make a difference. However, when I
try to start the windows driver foundation, I get an error 31, a
device attached to the system is not functioning, although as far as I
can tell everything is functioning. So maybe it's this?

Nick

Hi,

Uninstall, not just disable, all the Symantec software.

Hopefully that will help Axiom, but I'm running nod32 anti virus, and
Comodo firewall. Again, both of these were disabled.

As a side note, it's a constant source of frustration that it seems
that 'disable' doesn't mean 'disable' with regard to some AV products.
But is this the fault of the AV program, or is it that the software
app is falling over the disabled AV when it shouldn't? And I vote for
meaningful error messages.

You shouldn't need to uninstall for the upgrade advisor to run, but if you
do an 'upgrade' from XP to Vista, please do uninstall both the A/V and
firewall. Way too may failed upgrades fail until they are uninstalled.
Any chance you are trying to run the advisor on a 64-bit version of XP?

It's WinXP 32 bit. The failure of the upgrade advisor seems to be a
known issue at MS, but they don't appear to know why.
