Windows wants to install update on shutdown

The last two times I have shut down my computer I have gotten the message to
"click to turn off and install important updates and turn off your computer."
I have opted to shut down without installing as I am not aware of any
updates being downloaded, other than Windows Defender updates, which
installed already.

I went to the Windows update site to see what critical updates might
possibly be needed and the only thing it brought up was SP3. Windows isn't
trying to get me to install that on shutdown is it? How can I find out what
these supposedly "important" updates are that Windows wants to install?

Same thing happened on the work computer. I checked the windowsupdate.log.
The computer updated today with the normal monthly type updates and no WinXP
SP3.

How do you check windowsupdate.log?

Nevermind about how to look at the windowsupdate.log. I found that answer
(Run, open, %windir%\windowsupdate.log), but all the stuff I found in the log
meant nothing to me.

Hi there, I'm at work and this is difficult for me using the web interface.

This is all that installed at work:
Security Update for Windows XP (KB950749)
A Critical security issue has been identified in MSJet40.dll that could
allow an attacker to compromise a Microsoft Windows-based system and gain
control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update
from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your
computer.


SP3 would install most likely via WU the same as IE7, you would need to
accept the EULA.

I must admit I too was suspect of an update wanting to install at shutdown
which normally it displays the yellow shield so you can check before it
actually installs. But nothing happened except the update installed later, it
got impatient waiting for me to make up my mind and installed. This computer
is set to download and install. Not my choice but my employer's choice.

Ah! That's interesting. In looking through my windowsupdate.log I came
across an entry that said something to the effect that download of KB950749
was paused. Then later on I found "AU Found 1 update for install at
shutdown", so I'm assuming perhaps KB950749 finished downloading and that's
the one that wants to install at shutdown.

It's way past my bedtime here so I will probably bypass the install tonight
but will go ahead and have it install tomorrow and see what happens.

Thanks, I have the same problem on both computers at home. For the life of
me, I couldn't figure out what XP was trying to install. Glad I have a
method now of checking the log.

This is an update to my last post: My computer gave up on me making a
decision, too, and went ahead and downloaded KB950749 on its own today.
