windows Wii Not Stay Asleep

I couple weeks ago I got a dell desktop with Vista after my old systems
mother board died. It's my 1st vista system. I have it set to shut the
monitor off after 20 min and to sleep after 1hr. But it keeps going in and
out of sleep mode for no apparent reason. I have no applications running. I
have the usual suspects in the system tray. I have symantec anti virus. It's
in the bedroon which is a pain. I'm using it with an old and very reliable
19" CRT. (When it dies, I'll get a flat screen). So it clicks as the system
goes in and out of sleep mode. I just give up and shut it down. Generally in
the past I've never done that. I just let my systems run.

Make sure the Internet Connection does not wake up your Vista.


Control panel>>system and management>>Device manager>>Network Adapter>>Place
cursor on the device>>Right click>>Properties>>Power Management>>Allow this
device to wake up computer OFF>>Allow this Computer to turn this device off
to save power: ON.

Are you sure Symantec isnt running a scan or something which is causing the
system to come out of sleep?

I've never had Norton/Symantec bring my machine out of sleep, so I don't
think that is the issue. Since the OP said this is an older model, could it
be maybe that the DPMS implementation on the monitor may be a little wonky?
Or perhaps the driver? I know that the generic PNP display driver sometimes
has trouble on some monitors, and usually a specific driver, like the one
for my NEC 1970NX, will solve the problem.

In many cases it is network activity that is the reason the computer comes
out of the sleep mode. Try this; Control Panel>Device Manager>Network
Adapters>Select your network card>Properties>Power Management Tab> Look in
the "Wake on LAN" box>Deselect any checked items. This should correct the
almost immediate wake up problem and get it working the way you want it to.
