Windows XP 64bit update not working

I'm trying to update Windows XP 64bit edition, but somehow when Windows
Update is launched, it first attempts to load the v6 version of it, then goes
to the v4 version. After clicking "Scan for updates" it just gives me a blank
error message:
"Windows Update Error

Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page."
The Automatic Updates seem to work correctly, but that way I can't view the
optional updates.

> [WindowsUpdate switching back to v4 and not working at all]

Ah, it's good to see that others have this problem too. In my case there are
three machines with XP 64 at work, and one shows an equivalent behaviour
(although in my case it tries to switch from MicrosoftUpdate v6 back to WU
v4). Funny enough, the other two computer work as they should.

I already tried reinstalling UpdateAgent 3.0 and did a regsvr32 with any dll
that i could find to be associated with the updater mechanism, but no luck
so far...

Regards, Arne

You receive a "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display
the requested page" error message when you try to install an update:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883614

=================================

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB123456).

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

The symptoms aren't quite like that. No error code is given whatsoever;
nothing about BITS is shown. And the error appears when you try to check for
updates, not when you try to install them, plus the Automatic Updates service
functions just fine.
Also, is the 4th Windows Update version is the correct for Windows XP 64bit
edition anyway?
