Windows XP Automatic Update Failure

When trying to update I get the following message:
The following updates were not installed
Update for Windows XP (KB898461)
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)
When I go to the history file, there are no error codes only (-) symbols
which mean canceled. However, when I watch the install loading, at the end it
states "failure".
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The WGA diagnostic tool has been updated to correct this problem seen by some
customers. Please download and execute it from:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

After running the tool, please return to Windows Update and try it again.

Thanks much I got the two installed. However, now I continually get the
update for 890859 but it is already installed. Any thoughts?

The suggested method worked... partially. I now get Windows Genuine
Advantage Notification (KB905474) errors. Still can't seem to make Microsoft
Update work. Perhaps this has to do with installing and uninstalling
Microsoft Defender Beta 2???

Buffplt.

A potential fix has been posted previously in this newsgroup. Here it is
again:

A problem with registry key permissions may cause the installation of
KB905474 to fail.

These permissions can be repaired using Registry Editor as follows:

1. Click Start, and then click Run
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK
3. Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
4. Locate the subkey HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck
5. Right-click the subkey and select Permissions..
6. Ensure that groupname Administrators allowed Full Control
permission
7. Ensure that username SYSTEM allowed Full Control permission
8. Repeat steps 5-7 for the subkey
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck.1
