I got a virus/adware on my PC and managed to remove it without too much
difficulty. However, Automatic Updates cannot be enabled and the Windows
Genuine Validation is not working. I do have a valid copy of XP and SP3 has
been installed.

I have tried the suggestions that pop up when the validation doesn't work so
I'm not sure what else to do.

Please help!!!

Thanks,
Mike

Hello Mike,

Run this WGA diagnose test:,
<http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/>

Reboot

Now try: <http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/>

Good luck

How have you determined that the machine is free of any/all viruses,
Trojans, adware, hijackware, and/or rootkits?

Did you install WinXP SP3 manually or via Windows Update?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

I used Symantec AV corporate Edition, Defender, and AdAware. XP SP3 was
installed via windows Update a few weeks ago (or whenever it was released).
This problem just cropped up the other night.

Thanks,
Mike

Can you validate here? =>
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/def...displaylang=en

Did you install Symantec AntiVirus only recently? Your (new?) AV app and/or
third-party firewall, if any, may be interfering. See...

Windows Genuine Advantage does not validate a copy of Windows XP:

Don't know if its the same problem I had, but if it is, then this might help:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916261

I could not update my windows xp pro (sp3) due to a virus. This virus added
a 'svrhost.exe' to the startup (NOT svchost.exe) and got this virus 3 times!
So if you check in your task manager and see this process (if the antivirus
did not detect it) end task, delete it from startup do the above steps (in
link) and restart pc.
