Windows XP Fails to install updates

Customer ordered new Dell from us and forgot to tell us she needs XP Pro.
System had XP Home.
I tried to upgrade to XP Pro with the one we had in stock. It would not
work because it was a SP-0 or 1 and the installed XP Home was SP-2. Message
said because it was an older version you could not upgrade so…
I updated the system with all the patches. Then I put a Dell XP Pro, SP-
2 OEM CD in, used the license for the Upgrade SP-0 and it installed
perfectly. Checked for updates and there were 110 of 'em! Downloaded them
all but it gave message that they all failed to install with no hint of why
or an error code.

Any suggestions?

Ignore the subject:

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation
