Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade

For some reason, I cannot use a recently purchased Windows XP Home edition
upgrade CD. When I try to reinstall windows, it says that it cannot find the
previous version of windows, and that I need to insert the disk. The problem
is that my laptop DOES have Windows XP home edition, factory installed, but
somehow it is corrupted. I tried inserting the Toshiba lapto CD that came
with the laptop, but the setup still cannot find windows. I don't want to
use the Toshiba disk, because it will only erase all of my previous work and
install from scratch. I am trying to save my corrupted windows, and this
Windows upgrade CD is not working. Any suggestions??

Hi Leon,

When you have a problem like not being able to find the current operating system, you are not going to be able to the Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade CD, not without providing a previous version of Windows operating system on a CD. With that said, you might wish to look at Hard Drive Mechanic located at http://highergroundsoftware.com/ and its price is $69.99.

It should be able to save your Files.

Thanks creator

I looked at the site, and I was about to purchase the software, but it warns
that the software will not work with external drives, that the computer has
to have an internal floppy drive to work. None of my computers have internal
floppy drives, because that is almost obsolete. I didn't buy that software.
Do you know of any recovery software that would work from an internal CD?
Thanks.

I am dissappointed in Microsoft, that they would let you pay the money on
their upgrade, then it can't be used, because the software can't find my
previous Windows, because I am an honest customer, who DO have windows on my
computer, just that setup can't find it. I have ran into this same problem
before. I think it's possible that the software was written to not find your
Windows software, Microsoft knowing that most Windows users got their Windows
factory installed from their computers. I think that the setup program should
have been written to find windows in, at least, the disks of reputable
computer companies, like Toshiba. Thinking back, I have never been able to
use a windows edition upgrade to re install windows, only to try to repair
it. Somebody should complain to Microsoft for fraud!!

Anyway, thanks.

Hi Leon,

It would need to be a Bootable CD. Do you have Nero Burning Software, in order to create a Bootable CD?

Could you get an Internal Floppy Drive? Then use it to create the necessary Floppy disk(s). Then copy the Floppy Disk onto a CD-RW Disk. Then attempt to boot up the computer using a Bootable CD.

No, The Master Boot Record is messed up, probably.

I have an external floppy disk drive. Is it possible to make the bootable
floppy disk using this drive, then copy to a bootable CD, since my CD drive
is internal? I don't have Nero, but I have CDBurner XP Pro.

Hi Leon,

All this should work, if Hard Drive Mechanic, doesn't need to write to the Floppy Disk during operation. Before you buy, ask them at

I'm sorry but I was wrong about ERD Commander. I've just tried it and it
always comes up with a system error whilst it is loading. I think Microsoft
have made a serious attempt to block people accessing the boot area. That
also applied to a Linux boot floppy. So far the only thing I've found that
does work is WIN98 boot floppy but that can't get you access to your old
files. I think all you need to do is get the boot sorted out with VistaBooPro.

If you already had Windows XP Home, you can't logically upgrade to
Windows XP Home.

The upgrade disk is looking for an *earlier* version of Windows to
upgrade from.

You might be able to do a repair installation, however. When you get to
the Windows Installation screen (after you've chosen Install!), you
should (or might) be presented with a choice to press R to repair
Windows.

Sorry for the redundant post; I was half asleep, I guess :-)
