I am trying to install Service Pack 2 and my automatic update thing isn't
working and I tried downloading it from microsoft.com and it just check's my
system with the little green bar FOREVER. Eventually the tool bar at the
very bottom of my screen will freeze up and will stay killed until I manually
turn off and restart my PC. How else can I just install Windows Service Pack
2?!?!

Hi -

I'm having the same problem ALL DAY today. I can't get Windows XP or Office
2003 updates.......the green bar just scans and scans and just now I got a
message to clear my cookies, temp files, history files and come here for an
answer. I don't see one on your question so I'm assuming there's something
going on with the Microsoft site??

I did put in my Office 2003 CD and did a 'repair' on the suite. I was
having problems with Outlook and that seemed to straighten that out but I
can't get past that green scanning bar for the manual XP updates (I never do
automatic).

Hopefully someone will see this that knows what's going on.

MultimediaLady - this is a reply to you and NOT to the original poster
"Unknown" in this thread, whose problems are quite different:

For a fix to this problem, please do BOTH of the following:

1. (not for Vista) Download and install update KB927891 version 3:
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891>
and then restart Windows.

2. For 32-bit systems, download and save to hard disk, and then install:
<http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe>

If this produces an error message about "Update agent already
installed", then execute the installer again manually, with parameter
/wuforce as in (at a comand prompt window):

WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

Then visit Microsoft Update again, and report back whether your problem is
fixed.

Hi Robin -

Sorry it took so long to get back to you - broke my wrist and can't type
that well!

I followed both your links and finally managed to get into the XP updates
area quickly - system is not hanging anymore. There was only one update
there that I needed and did download that.

I'm going to be formatting this system soon and loading XP and the Sp2 CD I
have. Will I have to use your links every time I want to get updates after I
do the format or did something go wrong with my XP install to cause the
update problem?

I received an email from someone at Microsoft regarding my inability to get
Office updates and tried her suggestions. They worked and I did get 11
updates today on the same system that has the XP problem.

Thanks for your help and sorry about the dely in getting back to you.

No, not *every* time. You just need to put them in once, and you'll be fine
thereafter. Do them before anything else.
