Start by doing a System Restore, use the last "Restore Point"
created before you attempted to install SP3. Also if I where to install SP3 I would choose to download the file and not use Automatic Updates. (See below) *** Install SP3 in 'Clean Boot' mode: *** How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 *** Where to download the SP3 installation file: *** (File is large but will only install components that your PC requires) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en Windows XP Service Pack 3 Overview http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Be sure to download and read the file titled 'Overview of Windows XP Service Pack 3' Note: "You can run the SP3 update package on any edition of Windows XP SP1 or SP2." Error message when you try to install WinXP SP3: "Access is denied" or

Such support will cost you US$59 per incident now. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 www.banthecheck.com Paul wrote: > When I tried to update my Windows XP Home SP2 to SP3, it continued for > over > one hour before coming to a screeching halt. Any help will be appreciated. <snip> Let's walk you through the install of Service Pack 3 and take into account the most common issues people come across (handle them before you come across them.) Fix your file/registry permissions... Ignore the title and follow the sub-section under "Advanced Troubleshooting" titled, "Method 1: Reset the registry and the file permissions" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377 *will take time (** Ignore the last step - you'll install SP3 shortly.) Reboot and ... Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this): SuperAntiSpyware http://www.superantispyware.com/ MalwareBytes http://www.malwarebytes.com/ After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products, if you wish. Download and run the MSRT manually: http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx Reboot. Download/Install the latest Windows Installer (for your OS): ( Windows XP 32-bit : WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe ) http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/d...displaylang=en Reboot. and... Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86): http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237 .... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root of the C:\ drive, do the following: Close all Internet Explorer windows and other applications. Start button --> RUN and type in: %SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE --> Click OK. (If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"... Reboot. Then follow the instructions here: How do I reset Windows Update components? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 Reboot. Now for SP3... Suggestions: 1) Download the full SP3 installation file. Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers (works just as well for you.) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en 2) Ensure (as well as plausible) you have no spyware/malware by doing a full scan with SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes. If you are following along, you have already done this! 3) CHKDSK How to scan your disks for errors http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265 * will take time 4) Defragment How to Defragment your hard drives http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848 * will take time 5) Ensure your hardware drivers are up to date (from the hardware manufacturer's respective web pages.) 6) Reboot right before you try to install SP3. 7) Disconnect from the internet before installing (physically disconnect - pull the network cable or disable the router/modem.) 8) Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications when you are about to install SP3. Usually right-click on the icon in the taskbar gives you a choice to do so. Install SP3 by running the downloaded executable. Reboot when requested to do so. Logon and let the machine 'settle' for about 10 minutes. Reboot. Give it 5 minutes after logon to 'settle' - reboot. After that - there will be more updates. Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer and visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a CUSTOM scan... Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages - first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can release the CTRL key after clicking each time. Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates (deselect any others) and install it. Reboot again. If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a time. Rebooting as needed. The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend against the "Windows Search" one and any of the "Office Live" ones or "Windows Live" ones fornow. I would completely avoid the Optional Hardware updates. Also - I do not see any urgent need to install Internet Explorer 8 at this time. Come back - let us know if that worked. .... Really - come back and let everyone know if that worked. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

This will be a marathon. I have been doing fine without the SP3 while getting
the other updates automatically for a long time. Will the other regular updates fail because of the botched-up SP3 upgrade? If not, I may go for living without SP3. It doesn't take too much of your actual time and you end up with a working/possibly cleaner system for it. Could other things fail because of the "botched-up SP3 upgrade" - quite possibly, but more to the point - the "botched-up SP3 upgrade" points to something already being wrong with your system ;-) -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

Well, since you helpful folks poured in so much information and your time to
it, I feel like I'll let you all down if I don't put in my muscle into it. So, I will do it. Thanks for the inputs. SP3 installation failed again - the same way it did earlier. The same error
message - Access is denied. i spent 10 hours doing the steps you said. Right in the first step during fixing the file/regisrty permissions, I spotted 2 failures among the several hundred modifications it did. I continued with the other steps until the actual SP3 installation failed. I give up. At some point, I will do a clean install of Windows XP directly from a Windows XP SP3 disk. Thanks for your help. Thanks for your help. Sounds like corrupted files. Two things to try. Try one, test the install of SP3 then, if that fails - resort to the other. Both are less traumatic than a clean installation. ;-) First - SFC /SCANNOW. Have your Windows XP installation in the CD drive, then - logged in as an administrator, open a command prompt (Start --> RUN --> CMD --> OK) and type in: sfc /scannow and let it run... It will scan your files for problems and replace what is needed. When done - reboot and try your SP3 installation again (you are logged in as an administrator - right?) Second - if the first does not work - a repair installation. How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341 How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm Either of those should walk you through it - you'll still need your Windows XP CD. Also - you should follow this right after: How do I reset Windows Update components? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 Then install SP3 per the instructions given earlier. Both of those methods are non-destructive - so your stuff should remain safe (but backup once more before you try anything.) -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |
