Microsoft only supports the application of updates via Internet Explorer, as
some of the logic is in an ActiveX control, and ActiveX controls only run
under Internet Explorer, not other web browsers. There are some unofficial
third-party sites which support delivery of Windows updates via Firefox etc.

What makes you think that Internet Explorer is not present? If you go
Start -> Run, then type in:
iexplore
and click OK, what happens?
