So what follows is guesswork! There seem to be problems installing catalog files. 1. Could you check that the NTFS security permissions on C:\WINDOWS\System32\Catroot and C:\WINDOWS\System32\Catroot2 and ensure that the Administrators group has Full Control? 2. Please download Dial-a-fix 0.60 beta from http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix_beta and use it to Repair Windows Update and Crypto services. Does any of that help? -- Robin Walker [MVP Networking] |

Problem is (as I indicated in org. post) there are no logs pertaining to the three failed KB's... All other updates/patches, etc have logs but not these KB's... The only message as to what has happened is the "unsuccessfull" message that comes up that the end of the Windows update window alone with the indicate of the others that wrere successfull. The next message in the same window points to the help and support page/s if one has a problem. Hence why I here. All third-party security related software has been 'dumded-down' to minimum levels and all other operations appear to be operating normal. Tried again just before this post and again the same problem! > |

Usually when one installs or attempts >>> to install a new updtae/patch a log is automatically generated. >> >> Please post the relevant sections from C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log > > G'day Robin, thanks for you're reply. Problem is (as I indicated in > org. post) there are no logs pertaining to the three failed KB's... > All other updates/patches, etc have logs but not these KB's... That's why I asked you to post the relevant sections from the file C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log which always exists and always contains information. -- Robin Walker [MVP Networking] |

ok. I read this on another part of this board somewhere. It fixed about 90%
of my updates not working problem. It still doesn't clear up IE7.0 not updating, but was fairly successful none-the-less. Go to C:\windows\system32\ Copy the directory CatRoot directory under another name. Go into CatRoot. [There should be a couple strange looking number/letter folders. The first I think has only a timestamp. The second has a bunch of catalog files. ] Go into that second folder. Delete all the files starting with KB. (note you should have a safe copy of this since you copied CatRoot). Reboot and try again. My guess is that some of these files get corrupted and windows may check some previous catalogs while installing new ones. The corrupted files may cause issues. The first time I did this, I removed too may catalogs (but removed non KBs also), and I got a different error. I put some back in, and viola, most of the updates worked from then on.
