windows xp will not shutdown

When I click the shutdown icon everything works fine. I get the blue screen
then it states saving your settings. After it states windows is shutting down
and from there it won't do anything else, it remains stuck. I have xp service
pack 2 installed and plenty of memory. Anyone have any ideas, I would really
appreciate it. Otherwise I don't have any other issues.
