Windows xp not shuting down properly after service pack 2

after I installed service pack 2, when i try to shutdown, in the START menu,
it takes about 2 minutes for the "standy, shutdown, restart" window to
appear. Please help.

i have the same problem going on, but also, not only does it take long to
shut down, but also when booting up. it takes ages now...and my system seems
to be performing at a much slower speed after the SP2 install.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
