Windows XP Pro Lockup/Freeze after Windows Updates

Hello,

After installing the latest 9 windows updates on August 9, 2005 my
system locks up or freezes after it has set for a period of time 1-5
hours. It has always been rock solid up until this problem.

These updates are the only change I've made to the system and these
lock ups started the same day I installed the windows updates.

I have the following system:

Athlon 64 3400+
1GB Corsair RAM
SB Audigy 2 ZS
ATI Radeon Pro 9800
Two NEC DVD/CD Drives

I see others in this group are having similar problems. Has anyone
figured out which update causes this problem. Also, would a system
restore to a point prior to Aug 9th remove these updates from my
system?

Thanks for any help,

quadaces

Forgot to add that the only thing I can do after it locks up is turn
the power off.

Do you use APC (powerchute) for this XP station

Hi!
I have also experienced the same: after a period of 1 to 4 hours the systems
freezes. Before that it used to be "rock solid" as you wrote. I installed the
latest 6 updates on August 12th. I have just uninstalled them and am waiting
to see what happens.

Sorry,
I have uninstalled the latest updates but the system still freezes after 4
hours of error-free operation. Any clues?

Hi!
Have you got a Marvell Yukon Ethernet Adapter integrated to your ASUS Mother?
Try uninstalling the latest driver which must have been downloaded together
with the latest Windoews Update patches.

Rodrigo

I actually have a Gigabyte motherboard and it does have a Marvel Yukon
Ethernet Adapter. It did download and install a driver update for it
the same day on windows update. What makes you think this may be the
culprit? I'll remove it and see.

Thanks,

Hi!
Together with the Windows update came this Ethernet adapter update. The
first thing I did was to uninstall the windows updates but the problem
(freezzing after some time) was still there. Then I re-install the windows
updates and uninstalled the Ethernet adapter update and the computer has
been runing again without problems! No explanation but it worked!
Try yourself and let me know,
Regards,
Rodrigo

I have a similar setup with the same network adapter. I am glad I am not
crazy and found people with the same issue. I thought it was the security
updates its good to know it maybe just that network driver. I will refrain
from doing any updates until this is nailed down for sure. Thanks for
posting so I knew I wasn't crazy.

Man am I glad I came across you guys! I thought I was going completely
insane and was ready to burn my PC. Now I'm relaxing in front of it
instead of beating my head on the keyboard in frustration. BTW, got an
ASUS A8V Deluxe with, you guessed it, onboard Marvell Yukon NIC.
