Windows XP Pro sp1 Update never finishes

Running WU and trying to install 5 critical upates of 2.6 mb (2 minutes) the
system downloads the first, then runs a veryfication, but never confirms or
finishes. It just keeps on repeating these steps. The total download so far
is not 2.6 mb, but 1.8 GB!!! Any thought on this one?

Secondly, my machine is constantly trying to contiue the download (in the
background) even after I cancel the WU application. An update.exe can be seen
flashing on and off and shows massive amounts of cpu % (up to 60%) being
used. I find this info in the windows task manager/processes tab. This
process can NOT be stopped.

Any help is much appriciated.

Instead of guessing why not find the diagnostics and look at them?

What does that mean specifically?

Are you sure that XPsp2 isn't downloading too?
(That happened to me on my XPsp1 partition.)
You can check on that possibility using the bitsadmin command
(in a command window):

bitsadmin /WRAP /LIST /ALLUSERS /VERBOSE

Again use your logs and find out for sure but you could get a big clue
by finding the path that the update.exe is executing from.
Hint: Run... msinfo32 /category SWEnvRunningTasks
