I had a motherboard failure, and had to replace it along with my processor.
After doing so, I cannot run the OS from my operational hard drive. I get a
failure in registration. If I buy a new copy of XP can I uninstall my old OS
(XP with SP2) and install the new OS (XP with SP2) without loosing all my
current applications and data? Any help would be appreciated.

Should be no need to buy a new copy. Ring Microsoft and explain your
case - you should be able to get a new activation key.

Why not just re-activate the copy you have now?

Sure thing, but no need to uninstall/re-install. Just change the product
key on what you have installed now to match the product key on the version
you will purchase (the type of XP must match --- Home or Pro, etc.).

Once you have the new retail CD of XP in hand, follow the 4 steps in this
article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;810892

Or you may be able to just purchase a second/new key directly from MS
without buying anything else at the retails outlets. See here if you want
to give that a look:

There is no need for another license as long as Windows XP is retail.

Perform a Repair Installation to properly detect the new hardware:
