My brother-in-law was in the middle of the Windows XP SP2 download when he
got a blue screen with a "can't find winserv" message. Does any one know how
to fix this? He contacted the Windows help center and they keep sending him
follow-up e-mails but never sent him a fix for this problem.

That error means the 'winsrv.dat' or 'winsrv.dll' file is missing
or corrupt in the Windows\System32 folder, or more likely that
the registry is corrupt. Make a new Windows XP CD with SP2
slipstreamed, then perform a "Repair Install".

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

or

AutoStreamer 1.0.33 (preferred)

Propably the registry has been corrupted. Or winserv.dll etc.

Anyway, he should perform an XP Repair Install.

(If/when this a success, don't thank me. Thank Michael Stevens for
writing that site)
