I have some network pc's on which I want to install SP2.

The Installation fails with the following error: "You do not have
permission to update Windows XP. Please contact you system administrator."

1. I am the system administrator.
2. It fails whether I am use the the Local Admin or any other Admin account
including my own account.
3. Both the Network Install exe and the Windows Update version fail on all
machines with the same error.
4. The failure occurs immediately after the files are either downloaded or
extracted depending on the setup method.

Here are two different logs of the setup:

Hey George,

Try these steps for the Windows install:

IE Browser Settings...

• Open your Internet Explorer browser
• Choose Tools, Internet Options
• Under the General tab, select the Settings button
• Choose "Every visit to the page" and click on OK
• Select 'Delete cookies' - it would take some time to take effect
• Select 'Delete Files' - it would take some time to take effect
• Close your browser session
• Open an IE browser session and connect to your site

... if that fails (or you can just try this ) can you try to install SP2
in safe mode?

All of your suggested steps were taken for the IE and I still received the
original error using both internet or exe install.

This was tried and also failed in the same way with they same error using
the exe.
Standard safe mode (Without networking) was used.

Any other suggestions?

Hey George,

Let's look at what Rights you have on the PC.

1. START --> CONTROL PANEL

2. click SWITCH TO CLASSIC VIEW

3. Double-click ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS

4. Double-click LOCAL SECURITY POLICY

5. Expand LOCAL POLICIES

6. Select USER RIGHTS ASSIGNMENT

7. Confirm that you have the following rights assigned to you and/or the
Administrators group.

- Restore files and directory

- Manage auditing and security logs

- Backup files and directories

- Take ownership of files and folders.

I hope that helps.

Hi Craig that last tip got me on the right track...thank you very much.

I had to correct the "Restore files and directory" as you suggested. I also
changed the "Log on as a service" right. It was actually a server policy I
had to correct on the Domain Controllers.

Active Directory Users and Computers-->
Right Click on your domain container and choose "Properties"-->
On the "Group Policy" Tab Edit your default policy-->
\\Computer Settings\Windows Settings\Security Settings\User Rights\

Then correct the right that is not setup correctly. . .after I set that it
worked.

Again, thank you for your help.

Thanks, I had the same problem for over a year.
I have computers on a network running Windows XP Server 2003
I was able to edit all the policies and the administrators group had rights
assigned to each except:
Manage auditing and security logs
It only had
Auditors
Domain Admins
groups assigned to it.
Like I said I could not add my self to it.

The techs above me had said I should be able to update Win XP to SP2, there
were no restrictions.

I am just curious, who sets this policy, is it set by default not to be
editable?
How could it be changed to include Administrators?

I ended up reinstalling Win XP and updating it to SP2 before I joined the
Domain.
