So I downloaded service pack 3 and got to the end and it said installation
failed and then said that service pack 3 was partially installed and my
computer might now work right, then my computer restarted. I would like to
know how to correct this, my computer seems to be fine, everything is running
right, but I would like to be able to install the update.

Hi,

I too faced a similar situation. I was installing Win XP SP3 on my SP2
machine, when midway the updated process stopped with the error message
"access is denied". I tried reinstaling the pack but everytime it would stop
at that point. So i reinstalled WinXP and am trying to update the same
through the update website, when i get the following error "Installation
Failure Error Code: 0x80004005". I have tried the genuine validation and it
passes fine, but this error does not go off!

Any help!

Regards,
Subodh

Engle mentioned kb article 949377 I followed through this article and nothing
worked for me. I could not find a way to turn off my AVG so I used msconfig
to disable it from starting up. when I rebooted and checked the task manager
I noticed some components still functioning. I followed the steps for the
advanced trouble shooting and I was not able to reset the registry and file
permissions. Is it possible that the antivirus / antispyware software is
interfering with this script file to succeed as well. I tried installing
another update and it failed too

Start afresh and read the prerequisites carefully! Uninstall 3rd party
firewalls and AV/A-S applications. Be advised that most 3rd party firewall
applications and AV programs need to be uninstalled by way of purpose build
removal tools (sometimes) available from the respective software
manufaturer.
