Windows Xp Service pack install problem

I have been trying to install the auto upddate for windows xp service pack2--
the install fails because it says: cannot install- the Product key used to
install microsoft windows may not be valid?? it is registered to me?? I
don't know what to do or how to check this-I'm not a techie either..but I can
follow dirrections..can anyone help me please.. thanks.

Hi roses,

Have a look at this MSKB article, "You receive a The product key used to
install Windows is invalid error message":

Although the article references Service Pack 1, the same applies to Service
Pack 2.

Whomever you purchased the computer (if XP came pre-installed) or XP install
CD from may have sold you a pirated copy of the operating system.
