I have just reformated my C drive--installed Windows XP Home Edition &
installed updates. While installing Service Pack 3 it stopped in the middle
with Error Message "A component's file does not match the verification
information present in the component manifest." How do I find out what
component it is referring to?
It went thru the process of undoing the Service Pack 3.

This is the 2nd time I have gotten this message. I did a reformat earlier
in the day and got to the same point except when I allowed it to restart the
computer, the computer would only give me a black screen. When trying to
restart in Safe Mode if listed a bunch of files and froze. I then reformated
and tried installing all over again.

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

Is WinXP SP1 or WinXP SP2 already installed?

WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron...tallation.aspx

Steps to take before you install WinXP SP3
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada.

Yes WinXP SP2 is installed. I don't think SP1 was installed. Not sure how
to check.
Thanks,

Don't worry about SP1 now. See the links I posted in my previous reply.
