Windows XP SP 2 Fails to Install

I recently had a problem where I could only access Windows through Safe Mode.
After doing a WinXP recovery using the disk, I am running well but I can't
get SP2 to install. I have the Auto Update running but it always fails.
I've downloaded it manually and tried to install but it says access denied.
It's driving me nuts! Does anyone know anything I can do to solve this
problem without having to reformat.
